Federal engineers questioned Bay Bridge bolts’ integrity

Some federal transportation engineers questioned the integrity of the bolts holding Jersey barriers onto the eastbound span of the Bay Bridge in the aftermath of last year’s fatal crash, according to Federal Highway Administration documents obtained by The Capital under the Freedom of Information Act.

Engineers develop bullet-proof vests from cement

Engineers at the University of Leeds are using cement to develop a cheap bullet-proof vest. Students at the university’s School of Civil Engineering will create the new vests by combining super-strong cement with recycled carbon fibre to make a material tough enough to withstand most types of bullets.

Revised Bridge Inspection, Loading Standards On Horizon

Mark Bagnard, lead investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board, told attendees at the annual International Bridge Conference, held this year in Pittsburgh on June 14-17, that the state’s load ratings of bridges were inadequately measured and did not include gusset plates.
